Ember
Partnering with National Star College and funded by Innovate UK, the goal was to design a proof of concept for a commercial product that could lower barriers to employment.
Through filmed research and photography, we documented the lives of trainees with learning disabilities, observing their daily routines and listening to their stories. Kitchens, bistros, and offices became settings for discovery, each filled with visual clues, workarounds, and personal methods that revealed both obstacles and opportunities. The research took us into real-world environments like EDF in Gloucester and Starr Bistro, where we spoke with trainees, job coaches, and employers.
By building trust and being unobtrusive, we captured authentic moments and uncovered answers to pressing questions: What roles are available? What support is required? What stops people from being independent?
These insights inspired Ember, a digital helper app powered by iBeacon technology. Designed to guide trainees step by step, Ember delivers real-time nudges, helping them navigate tasks with confidence and independence.
